Intro

Fan art is the working title for a body of work that will be shown in a rough state in Phoenix this September (Studio Lodo), then in a more final form in Seattle next March (Howard House).

Things are a little clearer now. The old description is here.

Basically, this show is about using passion (obsession?) as a justification for appropriation.

The work in this show takes pieces of the culture at large and uses them to perpetuate personal narratives. In my case I've used a comic book vocabulary to illustrate stories from my own life. Darrell Jones makes drawings from celebrity photos that, taken together, form a kind of self portrait. Eddo Stern uses video games to talk about Israel, Sloan McFarland uses popular music to talk about creation. Heidi Neff uses the language of erotica to illustrate her own relationships, and Colin Chillag uses cartooning to place himself in the world.

In every instance, the base material is immensely important to the artist. A blurring occurs between the viewed and the created, between stories heard and stories told, between the real and the imagined.
